Aftermath - The Bruce Hales Review 

I promised earlier in this story, to explain why I have exposed some EB leaders and priests by name, after some returned in the ‘review’ (2004), to apologise for what they had done to us while we were ‘shut-up’. Here is why -

In or about 2003, the ‘world leader’, Bruce D. Hales decided to ‘review’ previous assembly judgements, right around the world, by decreeing that there was to be a ‘review’. This was orchestrated in view of getting us all back into the fellowship, then ‘shutting-us-up’ again within the fellowship so that we would never go public and expose the Holocaust that has been deceitfully buried by the leadership since 1965, of which Pip and I are victims. The ‘war- cabinet’ had contrived that if we came back into the fellowship, but then started to speak out, they could then threaten us with being ‘shut-up’ again, cast us into isolation from the fellowship, and who would ever want to go through that experience again.

The Gestapo had laid waste to so many families globally, that they had created a killing-field, of maimed, crippled, emotionally traumatized souls, which was starting to fester out into the public arena.

In the UK (2003 approx) an ex-member threatened to go public on BBC. This appears to have triggered the ‘review’ (so called), which involved B. Hales travelling to the UK in regard to this initial matter. Before the ‘review’ in 1999 approx, I took a risk that I had never taken before, I visited a member of the brethren for the first time in 20 years, and warned him and his wife of the dangers ahead regarding false teaching and lying. At this time I had not heard of the ‘review’. I refrain from going into further details about this devious ‘review’, as I could write many more chapters on my involvement with the new guard during this ‘review’ process from 2003 to this present day (2008).

The upper echelon of leadership today, is no different from the leadership of the 70s, other than their outward appearance. This change of appearance is easily detected by many ‘outs’ who do not have to ‘live and love a lie’.

Many, when excommunicated were told that they would go to Hell, but in the ‘review’ some, including my children, had been offered employment, cash handouts and alcohol to return. Maybe they imagined that we were lacking in these earthly items since leaving! I was disappointed not to be included in this offer. What they did offer me though, was a front seat position (first time ever, and, in my shorts?!), and, wait for it, the microphone !

The ‘review’, instead of assisting in the healing process of hundreds of divided families, only reopened and further deepened existing wounds. The damage globally is incalculable, as in this lies the repeat of psychological, and in particular, emotional abuse. Now in 2007-08, as the truth of this cult is being exposed by the media, there is a repeat of the same abuse against those of us who desire to tell the truth.

The contacts made during this ‘review’, between ‘in’ and ‘outs’, may yet be a powerful means through which to communicate, as this cult is brought to realize its error. What the hierarchy thought would further strengthen their position, might be the very means by which it is weakened, as ‘outs’, for the first time have been able to tell some members the truth. I believe that some of these members (not leaders) were genuine in their attempt to change things during the ‘review’. These members now secretly hold this truthful information in their minds and hopefully their hearts.

In 2004 (approx) Pip and I received a call to say that our tormenters would like to return to say sorry for past injustices. We agreed to meet them in our home (with their wives), one couple at a time. For the sake of time, I will only cover a few critical matters that exposes their fruits, showing whether these men are who they say they are.

MALCOLM HAMILTON

Malcolm seemed to be sincere in his desire to be forgiven for his actions against us, but two critical aspects were missing –

1, – the matters that he was involved in personally, were not gone over in any detail. It was just a broad-brush swipe, to swipe the 20 year old slate clean in one swish.

2, – there was no understanding of where the root of his evil had originated from; which was ‘world leadership’ of course.

In 1 above, it seemed to be more of a face-saving exercise, rather than facing the facts.

In 2 above, if one does not understand the root-cause of their problem, then we all know it will surface again, and it did in 2007.

During his visit I asked him a pointed question –

N. McC – “what was the single most powerful force that has driven you to do what you have done over the last 20 years”?

MALCOLM – “FEAR”.

I felt this answer was honest, and interesting, as fear always reigns in a dictatorship. I accepted his apology, but had grave doubts if he would go on to fully honour what he had said.

In 2007, I was asked by an ex-member (living out of Blenheim) to inquire into why, and which Exclusive Brethren member had stolen an item of his property from an auction market in Blenheim, and why no payment had been received for it. I spoke with the auctioneer, who confirmed the fears of the ex-member. The auctioneer named two EB’s that had attempted to interfere with these items, and finally the person who actually uplifted the items without paying for them. This person he named as Malcolm Hamilton. I thought now is my chance to see if Malcolm is actually the person he claims to be. I visited him (2007) once, and he promised to do what the ex-member (through myself) had asked him to do. He then proceeded to do nothing. After several months I visited him again and he promised to do the same as before. He then did nothing again. After several months I visited him again. He then denied what he had done, ordered me off his property and threatened to call the police.

When faced with a moral or ethical matter, he was doing what all good exclusives do, i.e. nothing, because in the past, most ‘outs’ who never got answers, have just walked away, or perhaps died, or committed suicide. In more recent times, things have changed somewhat, now we visit a little and hang around for the answers, and aren’t dying, yet, which is rather sad for them of course! I figured from this experience, that Malcolm was not the trustworthy person he pretended to be in our lounge, during the ‘review’ process.

Merv and his family were forced to move out of their own district (some EB’s did not move and were cruelly excommunicated) of Karamea, and come to Blenheim about 8 years before we were ‘shut-up’. Merv never aspired to climb the political ladder, and was a basically honest person. In 1979/80, the Generals of Superior rank were running low. Malcolm Beatson had been cast to the dogs, as was the Dave Ivory family, John Beatson followed in the same fate, the Monarch had been kind of kicked out of my home on his first rampage, and poor Malcolm Hamilton had been caught having a row with Norm Clifford and was shoved in the cooler to cool down. There wasn’t anyone else left loyal enough to the Fuhrer to lead in battle, except the innocent, inexperienced cow-cocky from the West Coast bush. Merv was henceforth summoned for duty.

Prior to the ‘review’, sadly, Merv, his wife and son were tragically killed in a vehicle accident. I never saw him again, but one of the ‘review’ priests told me, that Merv had often raised the wrongness of the way we were treated, a concern that apparently never left him, because Don Scarlet (NZ leader) would not let him come clean.

We face each other for the first time since our ‘shut-up’ days. All my memories return as the head goes into it’s normal downwards curve. I get ready to catch him in case he nosedives into the carpet as before. He follows a similar course to that of M. Hamilton, in seeming to be sorry for his part in creating a Holocaust, but no specifics, just the broad-brush approach. I decided to check out which face he was wearing since I last saw him.

N. McC – “In returning to go over your past, what motivated you to do this, did some one suggest it would be a good idea, or is it because others are doing it, or is it because you have come to this judgement yourself”?

PAUL – “It’s because I have come to this myself. I have been going over your case for some time and have come to it personally that I needed to come and see you to go over this”.

Words flowing like milk and honey, but I was not convinced, as his words, sentences and clichés were almost identical to those of M. Hamilton’s, so I decided to change the subject for a while and then come back to this question after he had forgotten what he had said. About an hour later –

N. McC – “As for the honesty of this ‘review’, if Bruce Hales (current world leader) had said – for all those assembly judgements that are more than say, 15 years old (our case was 24 years old), do not review them because they are too old – what would you have done”?

With chin firmly on his chest –

PAUL – “I would have obeyed him”.

N. McC – “If you have come on your own personal conviction, why would you have changed your conviction, if Bruce Hales had not agreed with it”?

The ‘review’ was a deceitful sham as mentioned earlier; what Paul said confirmed that it was a band-wagon that he had jumped on, to avoid falling out of favour with Bruce Hales. He had not come on his own personal conviction at all. I also asked him the same question that I put to M. Hamilton –

N. McC – “What was the single most powerful force that has driven you to do what you have done over the last 20 years”?

PAUL – “FEAR”.

– same answer as Malcolm. Interesting?

After the visits of P. Fisher and M. Hamilton, I followed up with a visit to both of their homes on the following day, to try to get a broader picture on the underbelly of this ‘review’. I came away none the wiser, except for a comment made by Paul’s wife, Ruth. She stated – “it’s sad that we have all been a lot of clones”. An honest admission.

I think it is more sad though, after admitting you are a clone, to continue on being that same clone.

I accepted his apology, what else could I do. One thing I do know is that he did not come on his own personal conviction, which he thought he had duped me into believing, therefore he is not to be trusted until he does.

The public pay for the barricades?

Australia’s Daily Telegraph is outraged today that an Exclusive Brethren school has landed more than AUS$9 million in extra government funding. The reason stated was that “rated one of the most disadvantaged schools in the nation, equivalent to an impoverished Aboriginal mission school“.

Why would this be newsworthy? Why shouldn’t a ‘disadvantaged’ private school receive unlimited public assistance as long as it meets the necessary requirements?

The answers to these questions can be found in looking at the reasons why the Exclusive Brethren have schools and their motivation for doing so.

It is a vital reason and a powerful motivation – it’s called Survival.

The Exclusive Brethren’s house is built upon a single principle – Separation from Evil. The easiest definition for this is that You are Evil and they are not.

As they rarely manage to attract converts into their closed fold, their future lies in their children. They have necessarily large families to enable this.

Their children are not destined to be educated ‘to be the best they can be’, they are destined to become the next generation of Exclusive Brethren. The boys will become Brothers and will work for or create a new EB small business. The girls will become Sisters and will bear children.

Neither will be allowed to attend University – ever. They are given official access to the Internet through Exclusive Brethren-supplied PC’s and China-style Filtering software. Their online activities are monitored closely, as is their use of EB-supplied cellphones, reading materials and friendships. TV and radio are banned – and they must never eat or drink (read socialize) with others outside the group.

As Exclusive Brethren do not have Univeristy education, they must recruit Teachers from outside. These are monitored carefully to ensure they never deviate from the narrow syllabus that is approved for them. Cult members are trained to become Teaching Aides to assist in this monitoring process.

The educational process is possibly the first and the only time an Exclusive Brethren child will come into regular daily contact with an outsider (a ‘Worldlie’) – it is a fragile opportunity. The Outsiders are watched like hawks. Many leave, unable to take the direct and indirect supervision.

The answers to our earlier questions lie in the fact that these are not standard schools. These are Exclusive Brethren ‘indoctrination centers’ which the Exclusive Brethren have managed to find a route to fund from public resources.

It is an almost identical proceedure to that which they use to ensure their windowless Meeting Rooms are made tax-exempt as ‘public places of worship’. To attend one of their services is not only difficult, it is well-nigh impossible.

The Exclusive Brethren are masters at maintaining an appearance of piety within a community they both despise and fear.

Until governments, municipalities and taxpayers rise up against the use of their money to repress the educational futures and destinies of Exclusive Brethren children, and the subsidization of their fortress-style private Meeting Rooms, cults like the Exclusive Brethren will continue to cause anger and outrage as their deceptive practices are uncovered.

A religious school run by the secretive Exclusive Brethren religion was granted more than $9 million in government funding despite getting $15 million from “other private sources”, the MySchool 2.0 website reveals.

The government handout was based on it being rated one of the most disadvantaged schools in the nation, equivalent to an impoverished Aboriginal mission school.

Yet despite its government classification as a “category 12″ school, with private funding it is able to spend more than $20,000 a year on each student. The average for a state school is about $10,000 per student.

It runs MET (Meadowbank Education Trust) School, based at Oatlands near West Ryde, but is, in fact, 18 schools spread throughout the state as far as Albury and Condobolin.

“This is a complete, total abuse of the funding system,” NSW Greens MP John Kaye said. “It’s very hard to argue that these schools are impoverished when they’re getting $15 million from private sources.”

Australian Education Union federal president Angelo Gavrielatos said the school’s arrangements highlighted the flaws in the federal funding system. “Like all private schools, this school is funded regardless of its income or wealth,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

“As a result it has almost double the average income per student of a public school.”

The school, which had no input over its rating, failed to return calls over the funding issue yesterday.

The story of Craig Hoyle is an indictment of the Exclusive Brethren.

In the uniform and monochromatic world of the Exclusive Brethren, Craig was a splash of unacceptable color. He was gay. He was a spirited free-thinker. He refused to conform. The story behind the following Today Tonight Australian news footage is even more dramatic than the high-speed car chases, mindless intimidation and the images of squirming cult members.

The underlying facts here involve the heart-wrenching story of an Exclusive Brethren teenager who is confused as to his sexual identity. In any tolerant and modern social environment, this is a topic for discussion, understanding and above all, caring. It is an opportunity to display love and compassion.

This would be the case in almost any community, Christian or not, but here we deal with the Exclusive Brethren …

The Exclusive Brethren, self-defined as the ‘Bride of Christ‘ and self-titled as a ‘Christian Fellowship‘, take a somewhat different approach when dealing with young men who question the official view of ‘what is normal’. The homophobic cult bombarded 18 year old Craig Hoyle with threats of earthly discipline, excommunication and spiritual annihilation. Craig was dispatched to Sydney, the HQ of the worldwide cult where he met with the ‘Elect Vessel‘ EB Leader Bruce Hales. While there, one of the few remaining Exclusive Brethren medical practitioners (attending University has been banned for Exclusive Brethren members since the 1960′s) prescribed the teenager with a drug that many describe as a form of chemical castration.

You may find just the thought of giving a teen such a drug to be horrific enough, but what was to follow defies belief. When Craig made the decision that he wanted to be true to himself and find out who he really was rather than be dictated to or remain chemically abused, he was forced to leave his family home. Since that time Craig has suffered more emotional stress than many can imagine by being denied access to his family, friends and community.

With admirable strength of character the now 20-something young man decided to take his fight to the Exclusive Brethren and contacted the media with his story. Such a dramatic story was bound to interest all levels of media attention and Craig soon became a focal point and example of how the Exclusive Brethren treat those who dare to think for themselves, or do not conform, or are simply … different.

A few days ago, the Australian Today Tonight news show attempted to confront some of the key components of Craigs’ story. They took Craig and a camera crew to interview Radiologist Dr. Mark Craddock, the Exclusive Brethren physician who prescribed a year-long “trial” of Cyprostat, a drug that many, including the American Civil Liberties Union calls a “cruel and unusual punishment”.

Following a very unimpressive response from the Radiologist who stated that he was treating “a problem” and attempted to pass all responsibility onto his teenage client, the Today Tonight news crew headed toward the place from where Craddock had received his orders: Ermington NSW, home of Exclusive Brethren leader Bruce Hales. The camera crew located themselves outside the Ermington Exclusive Brethren Meeting Room and waited.

What occurred next, caught on camera as seen above, belongs more in a movie screenplay! Unmarked cars raced through the city streets a few intimidating inches from the rear of news crew vehicles. Eventually the crew were forced to call for police protection and we understand arrests followed.

The entire story is a public relations disaster for the only public Exclusive Brethren contact – Jackson Wells. This top Australian PR firm  has gone to great lengths to publicize the fiction that the Exclusive Brethren are just a misunderstood Christian church. Could it be said that they are paid to make wolves look like sheep?

There is no mistaking the message that the story of Craig Hoyle provides. The Exclusive Brethren display nothing of traditional Christianity in their dealings with any person or group that dares to criticize them. Their public testimony is proof enough of what the Bible teaches is a perfect litmus test for false Christianity and false leaders:

‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them.‘ - Matthew 7:15-16

And immediately, we refute our own heading – no way is this the final instalment in the story of Craig Hoyle! The bubbly infectious personality that Craig enjoys means that this 20 year old man has many more pages to write.

Craig had the courage to publicize his experiences as a young gay male both within and then outside the homophobic Exclusive Brethren cult. The stories he has told of disciplinary measures, ‘chemical castration’ and the manner in which even his own family was forced to disown him has shocked all who have followed his story.

This website has received hate-mail for even reproducing his story! Comments from several Exclusive Brethren members have been so obnoxious that they could not be printed even after editing. How a group that attempts to call themselves ‘christian’ can produce members who offer such hate-filled correspondence is beyond extraordinary, it is perhaps the most compelling argument of all that the Exclusive Brethren are no longer Christian.

They have extensive historical Christian roots and up to 40 years ago, they were well respected in all areas of society. The impact of American James Taylor Junior in the 1960′s and subsequent leaders has been spiritually catastrophic. The Taylor/Symington/Hales branch of the Exclusive Plymouth Brethren is rightly described as a cult by many today.

Notoriously isolationist and conservative, the Brethren started in the UK in the 1820s but it only arrived in Invercargill, NZ in December 1992. It now has around 160 members in NZ’s southern-most city.

The eldest in a family of seven children ranging down to nine years old, Craig until recently worked in his dad’s Invercargill tyre shop. His whole life, from his day to day work and leisure through to his lifetime prospects, were mapped out inflexibly, and enforced, by the church.

Perhaps it might have been a bearably conformist life if Craig wasn’t gay.

Jury finds ex-Brethren guilty of indecency charges

A Nelson jury has found a former Exclusive Brethren man guilty of indecently assaulting four young girls, in a case in which charges dated back over 50 years.

Clive Ellen Petrie, 74, of Wakatu, was this afternoon found guilty of nine charges of indecently assaulting girls under age 12 and one charge of inducing a girl under age 12 to do an indecent act on him.

Petrie pleaded guilty to another charge of indecent assault on a girl at the start of his trial on Monday in the Nelson District Court.

The jury of nine women and three men took over four hours to return their verdict.

The Crown said the charges related to indecent assaults against four women when they were young girls in the 1950s, early 1960s with a further lot of offending against a fourth victim in the 1980s.

Coast woman calls for senate inquiry

A Sunshine Coast woman who blames the Brisbane Christian Fellowship for breaking up her family has called for a Senate inquiry into “cult” churches.

Helen Pomery has been divorced by her husband of 30 years and cut off from two children and three grandchildren since she was ex-communicated from the BCF in 2001.

She was given a week to leave home after refusing to “submit” to the orders of her husband and other BCF elders, who had banned her from contacting a daughter who had already been ex-communicated from the church.

Ms Pomery, who has relocated to Maleny, wants a once proposed Senate inquiry into the right wing religious sect, the Exclusive Brethren, to go ahead, and to include the BCF.

She said the BCF, which is a part of a network of 25 churches, including one at Forest Glen, used intimidatory and abusive tactics to maintain control over members, and was responsible for family break downs.

Senator Bob Brown has twice proposed an inquiry into the Exclusive Brethren to examine its role in family breakdown, the psychological and emotional effects related to its practices, and its exemptions from regulatory requirements.

However, his proposals have been defeated and the matter was instead referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs late last year.

Ms Pomery said organisations such as the BCF were granted government concessions as churches but were not subject to regulation or answerable to any external authority.

The Daily contacted the BCF for comment but had not received a reply.

Mrs Pomery has written to all Federal and State politicians about the BCF but she said feedback indicated Labor politicians were reluctant to support an inquiry because they believed that religion and politics should remain separate.

She said France had already set a precedent by establishing a group to look at sectorial aberrations.
