Actually, between my post 25476 and 25487 above, I did attempt a lengthier and more serious post, which disappeared most frustratingly (for me anyway) into the ether when I hit the 'send post' button, despite my well-credentialled attempt to add the two proffered numbers ... anyway, as reticent as I am after this time-consuming experience, fortified by a wee dram or three of red, I'll attempt the gist of the post once more ... that I think 'shutting up' is one of the more inhumane of the EB practices, visited, from what I can make out, on the vulnerable when they are most vulnerable ... it's like a solitary confinement version of 'separation' ... can't communicate with them within, can't communicate without.... the only contact the 'cheerless' priests that browbeat you into admitting to a sin that you have no understanding of, or recanting the principles you inwardly hold dear ... can't help but think of Galileo, but the optimistic side of me believes that inwardly he was not cowed or beaten, as I still hope today for my mum ... god bless her (though I can't bring myself to invoking a big 'G' god ...

I am a front row brother and as such have certain privileges as well as the tremendous responsibility of carrying things...not forgetting exercises, as well as matters, and certainly not forgetting cases.

UnregisteredI also reckon 'Shutting Up' started in the 60's - I was there, I was that soldier.
For me as a disaffected youth constantly getting my ear bent for non-attendance, (amongst other things), I was as pleased as punch, as it was exactly what I was after. Think of it - no more visits from unctious 'heavies' wringing their hands and threatening me with eternal damnation and of course I couldn't go to meetings, oh dear!
I suspect they thought they'd leave me to stew in my own juices for a while and it would bring me into line. In reality it was a breathing space and gave me time to sort out things in my own mind.
Looking at it from a peeb perspective it was a spectacular own goal.

Unregisteredwasn't me![the fisherman]but don't be too harsh-black humour is a coping technique for traumatic situations.I saw my uncle come close to taking his life when he was shut up-cut off from his family-wife-friends.Unfortionately he didn't realise he really didn't have to put up with it-he could have and should have packed up and left,be he-and we-didn't realise that back then.We do now-and we did pack up and left.I wish more people felt the same way,but the leaders count on them not knowing-the real basis for ''separation''
Shutting up is not unique to EB-all cults practice it-its an essential to control people who might cause others to start thinking for themselves too

There were care meetngs and some people got withdrawn from and they had to leave the Hall there and then and were shut up for ages. One chap got withdrawn from for listening to his radio outside the Hall and he went missing for ages. Believe he enjoyed himself living a normal life of listening to music, eating out, mixing with nice folks, and seeing the world. Sadly, he came back home and confessions his "sin"and he was allowed back into fellowship. But funnily enough, he still listened to his radion, ate out, attended concerts, etc.Some people didn't fare to well in that shut up process.

MemberNo problem Fred and other genuine contributors. I suppose we should be pleased that they are reading this site. I started the thread because I was interested to see if shutting up dated right back. My grandparents and the aunts who were in the peebs left in 1962 over the matter of not eating with those not in fellowship and talking to them some years ago made me realise that they didn't really remember such a thing. I realise that other cults do this but I think it is absent from mainstream Christianity.
My own experience of being shut up was pretty awful. In 1974 JHS decided that any ‘public sins’ such as going to pubs, cinemas etc should be confessed in public. One Tuesday night in Birmingham the young people confessed one by one to having committed such sins – except when it was my turn it was deemed more serious as I was married and had obviously been a bad influence on the young people who came to our house, so I was shut up. I remember going home and telling my wife – who was only 18 and pregnant with our second child what had happened and she was devastated and cried a lot as she was also now shut up. What followed for the next twelve months is impossible to follow by those who haven’t been in the peebs. At first two priests used to come every Tuesday night. It was a case of how much they knew and what we were prepared to tell them – very like a police interview I would imagine. So and so from London says that at Exeter three day meetings before you were married you kissed her etc. (a lot of this went on straight after Aberdeen!) They wanted to know every detail of what happened. Every week they would come with more names as this was obviously going on around the country with ‘priests’ comparing notes. Sometimes I would have no idea of what they were talking about and then I was trying to hide something from them. If nothing happened then why would she say that? Too much to drink? Then having exhausted these lines of enquiry the visits would get more infrequent, sometimes miss a week, sometimes miss two weeks, once they left us six weeks between visits. Every Tuesday night we would sit there waiting to see if we would get a visit. When our baby was born we pleaded that my mother be allowed to come and look after my wife as I was trying to run my business. Don’t forget we knew no one outside the peebs and the peebs would have nothing to do with us. Eventually my mother was allowed to come in for a couple of hours a day on condition that she didn’t speak to us. After twelve months of this they turned up late one night to say that I had been withdrawn from and that my wife and two children should pack immediately and leave me which they did. If things were bad they had just got a whole lot worse. I spent many lonely nights wondering where they were and what they were doing and walking the street to try and stay sane. She went back and was made a tremendous fuss of but after six weeks called me to say she couldn’t take it any more and to come and collect here from Guildford where she was staying. I went to get her and we sat around the corner in our car for hours not sure of what to do. She couldn’t live apart from me but she knew that she was saying goodbye to her whole family if she came back to me. She came back and we slowly managed to build a new life for ourselves. She did not see her family again until a few years ago when the peebs made contact with her, opened the doors briefly allowing some contact and then slammed them shut again when it was obvious that she wasn’t going back. Same for me – both my parents died in the peebs, on both occasions my brother and I received letters to say that they had died and been buried six weeks before. A few years ago I also was allowed to make contact for a couple of months with my sister who I hadn’t seen for thirty years. Ironically she told me that there had been a discussion about why I had been withdrawn from – as no one could remember!

"Shutting up" (often as a prelude to being "withdrawn from") was introduced by Jim Taylor in the 1960s. I had it done to me in 1966 (breakfast pushed round my bedroom door etc) and voluntarily left home in the next couple of days - rather than endure such treatment. I gather I was "withdrawn from" some time later - probably for leaving home!
What Anon 25525 appears to be alluding to, in the 1950s, is actually being "withdrawn from", which of course was a longstanding EB practice.
