Wow- I spent my growing years in the Exc.Bethren. My widowed mother was withdrawn from when I was 13, the 'thought police' used to visit and they were very nice to me but I spurned their offers of a new home/family and continuing membership. After that i discovered I had 2 brothers and a sister I had forgotten about becuase of the family break-up routine. My brother rode bikes. Age 15 I took his Honda 360cc through the local BMX track without dropping it and earned the open-mouthed admiration of every male kid for miles around. I ended up owning a Ducati 750 roadbike ( all 7 1/2 stone of me). Now I am 55 and own a station wagon, but hey I can still ride a bike. I saved the devil bike pic, hope you don't mind- when I retire I plan to end up on a souped-up electric scooter hehehe. You could make big bucks redesigning bikes!!! wow and wow again.

If you or I avoided paying tax like this the tax office would jump on us as quick as lightning. Any place they meet in they call a 'place of public worship' and claim tax exemptions. Come on tax office be fair to all Australians not just one group.

I am with the Open Brethren now, having been with the Closed brethren for over 15 years in northern California, many meetings have now moved to the grave yards for they have all passed away, I attend an open meeting for there are over 20 assemblies that are thriving, the largest assembly has two teaching meetings on the Word, on Sunday and two Breaking of Breads each and every Sunday for there are almost 400 in fellowship there. So the assembly has two assembly meetings in one place. The assembly started a work in the South in San Jose which has aprox 200 now as well. That used to be apart of the larger one in north San Jose. The reason of the growth is in the Gospel. That assembly is on 3 College campuses with an outreach called Salt Works, that feeds into the home studies which feed into the assembly,
The average age at Hillview Bible Chapel is aroung 29-35 many children and new borns and young marrieds. They have a prison ministry, college Ministry, High School Ministry and Childrens Ministry, All the northen California assemblies own a Bible Camp together where the Gospel is preached and even more are added to the greater northern California assemblies from the conferences and the camp work there. Thats how you grow! They man Kiosks on "God Talk in the Malls" where they pass out tracks and share the good news right in the mall at the Kiosk and invite people to the assembly showing Gods Love.

I can visit many of the grave yards in america where many assembly testimonies have gone, because those who held the responsibility were not responsible at all, and its the family that live on with less and less in a home assembly until its too small and your death will end it all. Read the demise on that Epitaph.

As a prison preacher in California attending the assembly in San Jose, I can say this affectionately, there is a reason why the Evangelist comes before the Pastor and Teacher in Ephesians four. The reason is, that without Grace and Love there is no Gospel. Its an acrostic I use, G-RACE O-F S-ALVATIONS P-LAN E-MPHASIS ON LOVE. You take the G and the L off of that word you have "of salvations plan" and there are many today that will teach you another way of salvations plan, only in Jesus Christ do we find the Grace and His love that secures our salvation through His name.

May the Lord give the assemblies the courage today to stand up for Jesus not hide away among ourselves, or we too will find ourselvs faced with sculpturing an epitaph for our own Grave. Its a dillemma of a testimony that will move each day closer and closer to the place where they will bury you. You will be the only family left in that assembly, and after you pass away, so does the testimony. Oh that those who are called "responsible" brethren or even "House Father" will be faithful in what has been committed to you from Christ Himself. I challenge you tonight consider these things.

Incredible book - hard to get into at first but after the 2nd chapter I couldn't put it down. Love reading true stories and wow what a life David has had. Could relate to some parts of it having been a very strong Christian surrounded by very strong Christians...still believe in Jesus but dont like religion and rules...a book that I hope other Bretheren members will read. I also hope they will take the risk to leave if they feel suffocated in any way by this sect. I know there is a lot of security and comfort in staying in places like these...esp if its all they know. But if it doesn't quite seem "right" and they have questions - and rightly they should...then maybe it's time to take a step in faith like David. He is now happily married to his soulmate I believe :)

I love the chair association!!! I am schooling Beth as to the exact Placings etc .... I could almost tell you who sat where in that meeting room that ate up so many hours of my childhood . I could also tell you which of the 'old sisters ' kept chocolate in their handbags to give to us 'after the meetings' But I will stop right there and not let my memory wind back any further since I am a woman who now - after nearly 50 years - is finding her voice after all that mysogeny God did not forget me!

My husband's family left the E.B. in England (Malvern) in 1970, after Aberdeen (Taylor's adultery). They lost everything, including their mortgage and home, and all relationships with their family. My husband was never able to speak to his grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins again. A business is correct. Despite all the rules, the women were supposed to wear chanel perfume, because Taylor had shares in it! We live in the USA now. Curious about what goes on with the E.B. in the USA.

Stuart! How well I remember that awesome old VW! She came kitted out with real handmade dark-green curtains; I had a hidden transistor radio that I kept hidden (of course) under the drivers seat. When I discovered that the radio earphone socket could feed to another speaker, I swiped an old Meeting Room speaker and ... my VW was ready to go! Her name? I was 18 and naturally called her my 'Birdmobile'. Of course you must never mention this to anyone else.

Like you I have never experienced the childhood innocence of Christmas - leaving out a cookie and a glass of milk that magically disappears by morning ... imagining the patter of reindeer hooves on the roof - but there is sheer joy in seeing it in the eyes of children. Fundies and others harp on about the pagan origins but on our sideboard every Christmas is a plaster figurine of a hatless Santa Claus kneeling in homage before a baby in a manger. As parents we can find the connections ... its our job!

Thanks for writing and for the memories.
