I came back from holiday (vacation to those over the other side of
the pond) last week to find two EMails as a result of my mention
on the Names page,
one from a television producer doing a film on the brethren
and the other from a detective investigating a 1976 murder of a brethren
woman 500 miles away from here in Plymouth.
Writing this 20/7/98
Keep up the good work.

I too was raised in this cult and I have begun a book about the cult and
what I experienced in my town and family. I have talked with countless
ex-brethren, whose lives and families have been torn apart. The higner ups,
the deacons, if you will, will be held responsible by God for tearing
familite and lives apart. The men in each assembly in each town that are the leaders
act as if they are God and are run by fear and man made rules, not the
love of Jesus Christ. They seem to forget that Christ came to set us
free from legalism and man made rules. It is He, the Lord Jesus, to whom
our allegiance is due, for it is Him that gives us life, and gives us each
breath we take, nor Mr. John Hales. Mr. Hales is the so-called leader
and resides somewhere in Australia. He acts as if he is God. When a
problem arises in an assembly, they call Mr. Hales and ask him what
to do. They evidently cannot think for themselves. If they do what
Mr. Hales tells them to, they are not following Christ, but a mere man!!
I know of people that are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs, that have
committed suicide, that have completely had nervous breakdowns, and that
live on pills, just to cope with what this system has done to them. I
praise the Lord Jesus to this day, that in 1971 my father had the guts
to stand up to them and tell them he would not follow what a man said to
do, but would only follow the Lord Jesus. They all walked out on us,
and when we tried to come back in the building, they had changed the locks.
How I praise the Lord for this! For now I am saved, a true Christian,
with eyes on Jesus, not a man. Also, there is a great amount of [illegal]
behavior and other dirty dark secrets going on. So far that I know of,
no one has had the guts to say anything about this. They just take
another pill and go on. Drinking occurs at a very young age. Also. This
is supposed to prove you have the Holy Spirit. Mind control is the biggest
thing in this cult. They teach you from birth up that God will kill you
if you leave the cult or if you make a wrong move(sin). They focus on
the outward appearance more than the heart. You are holy as a woman if
you have long hair and wear a scarf. But the Lord sees all the dark
secrets of the heart and wants it cleaned out first. Then the outward
appearance will follow. Some uncles of mine, that live right down the
street have done some unspeakable things, yet they think no one knows
about it. But, uncle, and Mr. Hales, you cannot hide one tiny thing
from God. He sees everything. You may think you have gotten away with
it, but there is all eternity to answer for it. Also, I haven't yet
met one person in the exclusive or Plymouth Brethren, that is an active
member and truly believes in their teaching, that is saved. You cannot
be saved when your entire view of God, the Bible, and the Lord Jesus is
distorted!! I pray constantly for those still in the cult, as I am
related to a great deal of them and I want us to be together in heaven!
Thanks for listening.

I am the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (Betty) Ballard (nee Silk) of Vancouver. My grandparents are
Philip (lives with my parents) and Hazel (now deceased) Ballard of Vancouver and Ken
(left the brethren in 1972?, deceased in 1987? and Jean (still with the brethren) Silk. I have
five siblings in the brethren. I left the brethren in 1988 at the age of eighteen. I went to live
with my second cousin, Doug Ballard and his family. My grandfather had three brothers
Frank, George, and Alf (the father of Doug) who all left the brethren between 1962 and
1976? I was very fortunate to be able to leave the brethren and live with a "normal"
family. I have since finished my Bachelor of Arts degree (1995) and my Bachelor of
Laws degree (May, 1998). Over the next year I will be an articling student (ie. student lawyer).
I have read with interest the many different postings on this site and I appreciate the time
everyone has taken to contribute. My own time is quite limited but I am hoping to publish
some papers I wrote during my undergraduate days. Although I can make no representations
as to what services I can provide, I may be able to provide some assistance to those seeking
a legal opinion, particularily in the Canadian jurisdiction. Currently my wife Nicole
(married in 1991 never in the EB) and I are also the Caretakers of an 80 acre park in
New Westminster (a suburb of Vancouver) It would be a good site for an Ex -EB
reunion next year. We also have just had a baby girl in March of this year. I appreciate
and applaud those who are putting in a great deal of time to maintain this site.

We left Taylor brethren in August 1970 after Ian was an eye-witness of the infamous Aberdeen meetings. Went through
various divisions post-Aberdeen and finally left brethren in 1975 when we moved to Holland. Since then have lived in
Germany, London area, USA (New Jersey) before moving to Scotland in 1986 where we still have our main home,
hence first address. Ian is currently Managing Director of an engineering company in Peterborough, England, hence
second address. Involved in setting up new church in 1991 of which Ian's brother Phil (see recent entry) is now
pastor. We are both active members of a Christian business organisation called ICCC. Would be interested to

New to the Internet.. found this site and am so excited to see so many familar names of long ago. Pat and
I were withdrawn from, he in Nov. 1984 and myself l985. I think, Dick, that we are distantly related. A
cousin did a McElrath family tree, and got me going on a Dodds/Barber tree, my father was a Barber,
born in Vesta, Minn. We are very much in touch with a lot of the kids we grew up with in the meeting
and are very grateful for each of them. Would love to hear from any one of you who remembers us
Los Angeles kids and the good times we had. We have a married son, Scott amd daughter Amber just
graduated from college and about to start her first teaching job. My mother, sister Linnea and her
family are still in the Exclusives.

Date & Comments: We were brought up in EBs in South Africa and left in 1962 due to eating question and also
refusing to allow strangers in to hear the "gospel".
Then Bruce Hales visited, and we saw the hardness of heart created by the "new truth" when a brother told his
12 year old son who was not breaking bread to go sit at the back in a chair by himself. After 7 years of meeting
with other 'outs' in a private home, with no real spiritual growth, we went to the so called "Open Brethren"
who were not all that open, and saw REAL christianity, with a love for the Lord which left us ashamed of
our spiritual pride.
We confessed this to the Lord, and put our past behind us, and started to
grow spiritually.
In 1977 came to Canada and now felloship with a wonderful OB assembly where
the Lord's name is honoured and the scriptures obeyed, without legality
but not too loose either. Never had we experienced such warm
christian love, and the full recognition of the oneness of the body of
Christ.

I was born into the Brethren movement in 1950 and was local in Falkirk, Scotland. I married
within the movement (Robert Amor, formerly of Leeds and York) and we lived in Grangemouth/Falkirk.
We had four children, Keith, Dennis, Julie and Guy. In 1979 we left the Brethren as a family, but sadly
have since divorced.
My parents, Robert and Dorothy Gibb, and sister Lyn, who married James Flett of Perth, are still very
active within the system as are most of the relatives of my husband.
I found it interesting to read accounts of Aberdeen as I was present and remember it as a very disturbing time.

Tonight is my first introduction to the Dwyman EB Guestbook and I am interested
to hear from anyone who would like to communicate with me. At the moment I do
not have an e-mail address hence have given my postal address.
I was brought up in the EB fellowship living in Summit, NJ and remained in until
February 1965. This was shortly after my discharge from the US Army. Coming
back after two years of military service I hardly recognized the group due to numerous
rules and edicts. I left my parents' home and went to Britain where I worked for a
relative who had already left the fellowship. I was in Britain for a litle over one
year. Upon return to the USA I set up in business by myself and have continued
pretty much on my own. I have been cheered to make contact with the Ted
Druckenmiller family and it was on his computer I have gained the aquaintance
with this wonderful web site. We need more contact with each other and I am
greatful for the opportunity this web site provides for our reaquaintance. While
unable to make it to the recent reunion in Niagara, I have enjoyed reading the
comments about that happy occasion and hope there will be another.

was raised in the Bradford, PA meeting and asked for fellowship in l944 on
a weekend when Mr. Devenish was in town. Visited most of the meetings in
the East and mid-West when my father, A.E.Hyldahl, was asked to "take"
meetings and also, general conferences. Dad was "put out" by JTJR in l948
and Mother and I left with him. I went back, alone, in l949, and stayed
with Meabons because my parents had moved to Jamestown, NY.
Married Ernest Bullock in l95l - went to Plainfield, NJ meeting until he went into Army. A group of young people met at the Chapel at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Then back to Bradford. Had a son, ETB III (Tom) and daughter Marjorie. Left meeting about l955 and Ernie left us in l958. Now I'm married to Robert Juul whom I met in Jamestown, NY. He had three children and we raised all five. I have four grandchildren and seven "steps-" and seven "step-greatgrands." Would like to hear from anyone who remembers me or Bradford.

touch with your website. Through great mercy my wife and I and family of
six escaped in May 1970, just before 'Aberdeen'. We would much value
further contact with refugees of all ages. The Good Shepherd came to seek
and save those who are lost.

Does anyone feel the need to correspond with another young family.
[Site Keeper's Note] I am perfectly willing to withhold names,
email addresses, locations, and other information, at the behest
of the guest. However, I will no longer post such entries in
the guest book. This note poses a question and provides no means
whatsoever for a response.
