The Plymouth Brethren have their origins in 1820's Dublin, Ireland. The movement spread rapidly across Europe. One of the largest early groups gathered in Plymouth, Devon, England and that was when they first began to be called Plymouth Brethren.

Following a major rift in the late 1840's, the Plymouth Brethren split into two separate camps. The ‘Open’ Brethren remained relatively non-sectarian, but the ‘Closed’ or ‘Exclusive’ Brethren fragmented into numerous discordant tribes over the next 120 years.

The most extreme and introverted group of all are today known as the Exclusive Brethren.

The last major rift in the Exclusive Brethren was in many ways the easiest to understand. The world leader, American James Taylor Jr. was discovered in bed with another man's wife.

Alcoholic 'Big Jim' Taylor attempted denial and forced a global division over his behavior. In a matter of days, there were only 18,000 Exclusive Brethren left. It was July, 1970.

The Exclusive Brethren underwent dramatic change during the early 1960's once James Taylor Jr. had established himself as undisputed Universal Leader. In the decade culminating in the Aberdeen Incident and his death a few weeks later, there were unmistakable signs that the Exclusive Brethren had become a cult.

It would get worse. Much worse.

The human cost of Exclusive Brethren teaching is horrific. Their erroneous interpretation of 'Separation from evil' has ripped families apart for decades.

The incomprehensible stress of losing family, home, job, friends and an entire social network has driven many to suicide - even murder.

Today, the Exclusive Brethren are an international corporate network of interlinked businesses and private trusts. It is highly sophisticated and brilliantly conceived. It is all about money and leverage.

The keyword is control.

On May 8th, 2010 Settlement was reached with the Exclusive Brethren.
